A person cupping their ear

Larry King once said, “I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I’m going to learn, I must do it by listening.”

From our constant interactions with hand held devices to the continuous stream of negative noise permeating daily life, our attention is always divided.

Step 1

Choose a colleague you frequently interact with, and give him 3 minutes of your undivided attention.

Step 2

Ignore any distractions during this interaction (including your phone!) and be mindful of your posture and facial expressions. Pay attention to whether or not your colleague notices that you’re listening.

Step 3

What did you learn from this conversation? What are this person’s thoughts or feelings? Do you think he felt that you gave him your undivided attention?

Message your coach, if you have one, or a trusted colleague or manager with any insights you may have gathered regarding this person or your listening abilities.

Listen carefully... you just might learn something!
