Can you recall the smell and taste of that burger you had for dinner last night?

Being mindful of your senses can enhance neurological connections in the brain and improve overall well-being. This next exercise is a great way to start a mindfulness practice.


Step 1

Sit down and choose a food item from your lunch to observe. Pay attention to how it feels in your hands, keeping in mind the temperature, surface texture, and smell.

Step 2

Now take a bite. What is its consistency? Close your eyes to enhance your senses of taste and smell. Remember to observe without judgment, recording every detail in your mind.

A beginning mindfulness practice doesn’t have to start with a big bang. Instead, consider moving forward with small steps and your five senses to better understand and appreciate the world around you.
