- [Instructor] It isn't surprising that when we feel run down, we aren't at our best. Working to achieve the optimum balance between our physical well-being and mental acuity is known as mind-body optimization. It refers to using the power of our thoughts to influence physical health while using the power of healthy habits to optimize mental functioning. Here's a few tips to help recalibrate yourself when you find yourself not fully charged. One, social connections. Having strong social connections does more than help us to feel connected. It actually affects our physiology in very positive terms. Research shows that strong social connections act as a barrier against stress, protecting us from their negative effects. One study showed that those who had strong social connections were likely to outlive those who did not, equating loneliness with major health risks. So next time you feel overwhelmed at work, try going out to lunch or grabbing a quick coffee with a coworker. Two, laughter. It seems obvious, but it's almost laughable how much laughter can affect your health and performance. Research has shown laughter has the ability to boost the immune system, relieve stress and tension, and even lead to a longer life span. Three, cross-training your brain. Cross-training your brain refers to engaging in tasks that are novel and challenging and contributes to greater neuroplasticity and brain development. Consider trying something that is out of your wheelhouse or working with someone who challenges you to think differently. Challenging your brain with new types of activities can help to create new neural pathways and increase your mind-body optimization. Try the previous three tips to give your mind and body a much-needed reset and increase your performance. And feel free to ask your coach for more specifics to try.
